GHOSTLY goings-on at Newmarket cemetery have been recalled by custodian Jim McBride who retires this month after 23 years.
One of the most famous sightings has been the mysterious appearance of hoofprints leading to the grave of Fred Archer, one of the most successful jockeys of all time, who committed suicide in 1886.
Mr McBride joked: "I'll miss this place. I won't see Fred Archer riding in through the gate."
Although he admitted he had not actually seen the ghostly apparition of the jockey, who won an amazing 2,748 races before his death at the age of 29, Mr McBride has seen unexplained hoofprints on the path leading to the grave.
Although the jockey is the most famous person buried in the cemetery, more than 2,000 people are buried in the original three-acre graveyard with more in the newer two-and-a-half acre "paddock" area.
Mr McBride, 64, of New Cheveley Road, Newmarket, got the job at the cemetery in 1983. Newmarket Town Council members are due to make a retirement presentation to him after the community services committee meeting today
