A ghost investigation
Looking for something out of the ordinary tonight? How about partaking in a paranormal event?
The Maryland Ghost and Sprit Association (MGSA) will hold a dinner and ghost investigation at the Charles Washington Inn in Charles Town, W.Va. beginning at 7 p.m. The 216-year-old inn is known to be haunted -- by no fewer than 12 ghosts, according to Beverly Litsinger, founder of the MGSA -- and over dinner, employees and customers of the inn will tell ghost stories.
"You can't work there and not have had experiences (with ghosts) because the place is so active," Ms. Litsinger said. In fact, "before I went there (several months ago), the owner wouldn't stay by herself."
Following the meal the real fun, or scariness, begins. That's when the group will begin an investigation to search out the resident ghosts. Ms. Litsinger and others will get out their ghost searching equipment -- such as night vision and electrical magnetic field detectors -- and wander through the inn looking for ghosts.
"It's a very interesting place," said Ms. Litsinger. "I'm surprised every time I go there. The last time I was there I met a slave in the basement."
If this is something you've never done before and are considering doing, you need not be scared, Ms. Litsinger said. It's a journey through an inn that just happens to be the oldest building in Charles Town. "It's not scary, it's interesting. You'll feel things you've never felt before. You may see and talk to a ghost, then watch your equipment go nuts."
The inn previously served as a doctor's office and funeral parlor, a prime recipe for ghosts. Certain past events have prompted the suspicion that ghosts haunted the inn: such as objects that have moved around; hot water appearing in a toilet; doors that have closed in front of people's faces; footsteps heard throughout the inn.
The owner finally realized, "they were not alone," Ms. Litsinger said.
Previous visits to the inn -- one of the more haunted spots in the region, according to Ms. Litsinger -- have resulted in not only seeing ghosts, but also talking with them. "When we find them, we'll stop and talk to them and sometimes they'll talk back," she said.
If you're lucky enough to encounter a ghost, you can't just go clicking away with your camera for a picture. Ms. Litsinger says you must ask first to take a photo: "We always ask permission of the ghost to take their picture. It's the nice thing to do."
Tickets for the event, which includes a top-notch dinner, are $38. If you plan to go, you must reserve tickets by calling Ms. Litsinger at 410- 521-3779. The dinner and investigation will last about three hours.
"We could find a new ghost (tonight)," said Ms. Litsinger. "Every time I go, I seem to find another ghost, and I say 'Boy, this place is haunted.'"
