Phantom Strikes Opera House At Boothbay Harbor
Over the past few years there have been many who've felt that the Opera House is haunted and that paranormal activity has been detected. As a volunteer who has been settled into the building for the past few months I can't add much to the tales of haunting, but I do suspect that the Opera House's Phantom is about to strike again.
Programming Director Kate Schrock and I walked into the office one morning a few weeks ago and were surprised to find a list of names tacked to the wall with a rather firm request that we send tickets to these individuals for the then upcoming Jim Weider concert. The names appeared to be random to us and included Bellows, Holmberg, Wyman, Partner, Royall, Ward, Traquair, Berger, Berne, and Christopher. They had been selected by the Phantom for some reason, clear to him, but unknown to us. Unwilling to question the Phantom, we obliged and sent the tickets. I suspect the Phantom was pleased to know that at least a few of his mysteriously selected guests were able to attend the concert.
At the bottom of that original list, the Phantom scrawled a few words indicating he'd be returning and would be selecting members of the community to receive Phantom tickets for every show this summer. I don't know if he will be true to his word, but if he is we will once again be sending pairs of tickets to lucky, or perhaps unlucky, members of the community. A request from the Phantom is not one to be passed up.
Upcoming events include a concert with both Jon Nolan and WCLZ artists The Coming Grass on May 26, Aztec Two Step in concert on June 9, a dance and concert with Big Chief on June 10 and the Portland String Quartet on June 11.
The nationally acclaimed Portland String Quartet has a long connection with the Boothbay Region, having conducted workshops at the Newagen Inn for many years. We are pleased to have them performing at the Opera House this June and note that proceeds from this event will go to The Opera House Challenge Fund. To date, the Opera House has received approximately $50,000 towards the $500,000 goal. In the coming weeks, board members and other volunteers will be soliciting support from all corners of the peninsula. With only four and a half months to go until the September 30 deadline, and $450,000 to raise, there is much work to be done. Please be generous when asked. It will please the Phantom
