EL RENO — You never know who’s going to show up at the Oklahoma Paranormal Conference, whether it’s people interested in UFOs, ghosts or "cryptozoology.”
"It could be anything not normal,” said Tammy Wilson, a coordinator.
They’re all welcome Saturday at the fourth annual conference, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in El Reno, which, by the way, is a site thought by some to be "historically haunted.”
The building was first assembled at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.
This year’s speakers will include "ghostologists” such as author Troy Taylor and Patrick Burns, host of TruTV’s "Haunting Evidence.” Other speakers will include Bryan Farha, Oklahoma City University professor and skeptic; Georgia Ghost Society founder Bob Hunnicutt; and Lee Ehrlich, a "paranormal deep-sea diver” from Florida. Erlich investigates shipwrecks and other submerged spots with haunting potential, Wilson said.
"One site was, I believe, an old house that had burned and was now under a lake,” she said. "I think there’s some Al Capone history there.”
Paranormal conferences are not like UFO gatherings or Trekkie conventions, Wilson said.
Usually, no one comes in costume, although at one recent paracon, someone did show up dressed as an alien and was carrying a hunk of metal he insisted was part of a space ship.
"We laugh about that,” Wilson said.
This year’s theme is "It Was a Dark and Stormy Night ... Celebrating the Ghost Story!” Topics of discussion will include why people like to be afraid and ghostly tales of yesterday and today.
